Nokia 5.1 - problem moving files by USB

I was transferring music to my mobile phone and photos from my phone via USB.  The connection stuck very soon.  In the past, I have been successful with Nokia 5.
I also tried to transfer with a Linux machine. Then I noticed that the connection was lost while dimming the screen.
So, I changed the display sleep time to 30 minutes.  After that the transfer worked without any problems on Linux and on Windows.

Limited options

I still use Skype 7 because the Enter works as I wish. In fact, mostly I write rather longer messages and I use separate Send button.

However, there are similar issues in other programs also.  E.g. in Outlook, there might be a option to keep the reading pane empty when launching Outlook or changing a folder, i.e. not to select any email by default. In particular, this would be beneficial for harmful mails.
I really do not understand why the IMAP folders can't be selected anymore according to the server used.

The worst case is like Chrome, where the Cleanup Tool (software_reporter_tool.exe) slows disk down at every start-up without any option to disable.

Windows 10 - fed up

Automatic updates

First contact with the Windows 10 was a laptop of my colleague. After the upgrade, 3G modem (WWAN) stopped working.  The reason was an older modem firmware.
When the modem driver was returned to the older version, it worked until the next automatic update. After the boot-up the modem failed again.
The firmware update should have been updated before the Windows update. Although Microsoft's data collection and compatibility checks decreased computer's performance at every boot-up, there was no warning at all.

Anniversary update

Another experience came just recently. A company's shared laptop was updated on an experimental basis in Windows 10. This computer did not have any particularly important role so, if necessary, it could be temporarily replaced with another one.
One morning we announced that the Windows update was going on. After some automatic reboots the screen was blank. After waiting time enough we forced the power off and restart the machine. It was a new experience for us to see a qr-code snippet as a part of blue screen.
I prepared to recover the laptop by downloading an installation package.  It took several hours to make a proper USB flash drive. After several failures we found out that the stick has to be initialized as GPT in accordance with the format of the laptop's disk. Now, there was a choice to Go back to the previous build of Windows.
After the restore, the machine was the pre-upgrade state. However, I was curious to see, how the upgrade occurs. This time I followed the progress of the upgrade. After a few auto-reboots the upgrade progress reached 99%. Then the screen went black.  Now I let the laptop be powered several hours without success.
There were no other choices but power off.  It was not a suprise to see the qr-code again. Installation media was ready, so this time the machine was operational in under an hour.

KB2687455 doesn't install

Windows Update didn't install the Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455) 64-Bit Edition.  The installation ended up with the error code 78F.  The system log had three errors.

Downloading the file and installing it resulted in the same error message.

In this case the system is Windows 7 Home prem. 64-bit and the installation language is English.
The software installed is Office Home & Student 2010 English intl. 64-bit.

Language settings of the administrative account were as Finnish.  All settings were changed temporary as English (UK/GB).  Now the installation was successful.  Settings in the Region and Language were not be tested one at a time, but Formats, Location and Display Language were changed at once.

Windows Live Mail transfer

The old laptop had Windows XP. There were both Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail used as a mail clients. The new machine is running a newly re-installed Windows Vista. Windows Easy Transfer moved the Outlook Express emails without any problem into Vista's Windows Mail.

I didn't found an appropriate choice in the Windows Easy Transfer for the emails in the Windows Live Mail. I copied  all contents of the folder 'Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\' from the old computer into the folder 'Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail' on the new computer. When starting, Windows Live Mail did run a recovery process. Even though the e-mail accounts were preserved, all messages were lost.

After some registry tweaks and numerous trials, I copied the data once again. Now, I removed *.chk, *.log and *.sqm files in Vista's WLM-folder. I deleted the *.chk and *.log files in subdirectories also ( Backup\new\, Calendars\DBStore\, Calendars\DBStore\LogFiles\, Calendars\DBStore\Backup\new\ ). In practice, the files Mail.MSMessageStore and Mail.pat as well as the subdirectories of the accounts and the messages remained. Now after starting the WLM the messages of the POP3 accounts were preserved also.

Windows XP's updates failed

On a portable computer not all of the automatic updates were successful.  There were following errors in the Windows XP's log:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (KB969615).

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8007f00c: Security Update for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB973540).
Neither downloaded updates weren't successful.

In the first case I didn't searched for any special solution, but I removed the PowerPoint Viewer 2003 and installed the Viewer 2007.

Another was solved by removing Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Media Format Runtime 11.  After a restart, first I installed all of the available updates. Then I installed the Media Player 11 again, and now also the update was successful.

Progress?

I'm hardly the only one who wonders many tiny cons in the software development.

Windows 7 lost some useful features which XP had. I often changed the sort criteria when multiple items were selected, without loosing the selections.

Nokia's mobile explorer had a choice to use the bookmarks as a start page. Recent explorer offers empty page as a choice, which means one more click.
